Typography Newbie

Wednesday, 6 December 2006

It's my latest fad. I don't know how long it'll last.

<img src="http://www.salameander.com/uploads/20061207lisagrahambook.jpg" alt="cover of "Basics of Design", by Lisa Graham" class="flow-left" />In the past few days I've been devouring a new book I bought (on the company's account)--Lisa Graham's "Basics of Design--Layout and Typography for Beginners" to help me get started on making our printed material more appealing to read. I jumped at my boss's suggestion to go get books to help me with my work. >:)

Two-thirds through the book, and I've already applied quite a number of concepts to an interim report which I'm using as my first typography project. Things like emphasis, contrast, being daring in varying font sizes, alignment...all for the sake of readability, first and foremost. The current version of the report is far from finished, but I must say that the layout is a lot more visually interesting than what it was. Will keep working at it till someone tells me that he actually wants to find out what the report says.

On top of this, there are So. Many. Things. To do.

Plan the year's activities for my department and set them to a timeline. Edit the copy of monthly reports. Finding ways to keep our customers happy with their investments with us. Evaluate advertising opportunities. Work with the ad agency to flesh out what to involve them in next year. Prepare for the next fund launch. Examine inter-departmental workflows and find ways to improve them. Make sure my staff are happy with their jobs.

I can't imagine how the CEO handles his work.

Luckily for me, I get a little nudge or kick from Brandon and the stress melts away, a frown gladly giving way to a smile.
