Choosing A Tie
Monday, 30 May 2005
It's mind-boggling. Guys, how do you manage this feat? I nosed around Isetan's men's department at KLCC and I was faced with the daunting task of picking out a tie that would be suitable for Han's wedding suit.
Should I go for a colour which I like (yellows, oranges and reds), or something that he would normally wear (grays, dark blues and black)? Should it be in harmony or contrast with his tan-coloured suit? Should I splurge on a really expensive, branded tie or go for another brand that's one-third the price but has about the same feel of the fabric? Are there such things as badly-stitched ties? How long are they meant to last anyway?
In the end I grabbed a warm, sunny tie (price: MYR 69) and ran over to the suit section to hold it up to one that was almost the same colour as Han's outfit. It looked alright. Then I ran back to where the ties were and had a look at the cufflinks--there was one that matched the tie perfectly, but I told myself to leave that alone till I was sure that Han liked the tie. 😕
Nuts man. Now I know why guys stay away from buying accessories for their girls.

Arrrgh corporate leashes!
No, I’m not a fan of ties. I can tell you they last an incredible long time; my MRSM tie is still usable after 15 years. They may sound like a good investment, but a really expensive tie that doesn’t look good with most of the outfits means it won’t be used a lot.
So my secret is to have a rack of ties so that I can pick the ones to match what I wear. Which means I’m a cheap bastard, but I like having options.
In your case, well, hey, it’s a special tie for a special suit for a special event, so by all means, special is always nice.
If you want to appeal to the geek in him, how about this selection? Personally, I’d go for this, but that’s just me 😛
She wasn’t kidding about the tie being sunny… I like it! Thanks to my wife!

Kotak: YEESSSSS!! But maybe I’ll let Han keep my credit cards so I won’t be tempted to spend. :”)
Hilmy: Phwoaaar, I LIKE that tie! I’ve got bedsheet with 1s and 0s too. :p
